Gresham's School 1st XI Girls vs  Culford School
On: Thursday, 05 May 2022
Venue: at Home

Having fielded no players older than Year 11 all season, the First XI girls surpassed themselves against Culford, playing 5 Year 9s and 6 Year 10s to become probably the youngest first team ever to take the field for the school in any sport.

Winning the toss for the first time this season, Captain for the day Charlotte Gaunt chose to bat. Grace Hanworth-Knights opened and hit an imperious 51 not out of 26 balls to take her average for the season to 71. Lottie Bowden also impressed, scoring 33, including five 4s, while Gaunt and Hetty Holden made starts with 16 each, while Esther Broad again carried her bat, having only been out once in her 4 innings this term.

We closed on 167 for 3 off our 20 overs.

In the Culford innings, the girls bowled superbly. Chloe Kydd opened and pegged back the pick of the batters for only 3 an over and Poppy Gaunt, at first change, kept the run rate below 3.

Katie Bragg was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 5 runs off her two overs, Poppy Goode a close second with 2 wickets for 6. Madison Haworth-McKenna and Zara Uthwatt-Bouverie, usually high order batters, chipped in with wickets and maidens to restrict Culford and bowl them out for 41.

Most remarkably, Charlotte Gaunt took 4 catches at short extra cover, including one diving forward that will certainly be a contender for catch of the season.

Player of the Match must go to Charlotte, a first time Captain who really rose to the challenge and led by example. The 126-run win was an outstanding first victory on the Eccles Pitch. Next up, we have a ‘friendly’ against Norwich on Saturday and then the second round of the National Cup on Monday afternoon at 2pm back on the Main Square.
