U13 IAPS Regional Qualifiers- Friday 15th October 2021

On the last day of half term whilst the rest of the school anticipated the excitement of house music, the U13A girls’ hockey team set off bright and early for Ipswich for their IAPS regional qualifying tournament. A long and exciting day of hockey lay ahead and thankfully they arrived in good time to warm up for their first match. The tournament started with group stages involving 4 matches before the top teams in the groups progressed to the quarter finals.

Gresham’s knew their first match would be all important as they faced Framlingham College Prep, likely to be one of the top teams! The girls started on electric form playing some of their best hockey and winning 3-1. This really set the standard and there were further convincing wins in the group stage over Barnadiston Hall, Old Buckenhall and Town Close.

This left the Gresham’s team as group winners and therefore with a more favorable quarter-final draw against West Hill Park. They continued in strong form winning this 3-0 and were on to St Faith’s in the semifinal. This was certainly a tougher game and remained very tight in the first half. Thankfully after a few close encounters at both ends Gresham’s scored first which seemed to slightly settle the nerves and allow the girls to push on to a relatively straight forward 3-0 win.

At this point the girls knew that their qualification for the National Finals was secured and perhaps this knowledge plus the exhaustion from a long day of hockey got the better of them in the final, where once again they faced Framlingham College. After holding them off in the first half to 0-0, after half time Framlingham continued to pressure hard and eventually broke through to score. Sadly, the girls had nothing left to fight back with eventually losing the final 0-2. Nonetheless, a huge achievement to finish 2nd in the tournament and they will go forward to the National Finals at Cheltenham College on Thursday 18th November. Huge congratulations go to the whole squad who all played their part in the day. Special mention should go to Mr Cowan for his amazing coaching and inter match games and to Mr Ling for his expert umpiring.
