Gresham''s U11 A Team v Orwell Park
Final Score Greshams 7 - Orwell Park 6
On a wet and windy day what a treat it was to see two young sides play an entertaining and expansive style of rugby. Right from the off, both sides moved the ball through the hands and attacked in the wide channels much to the surprise and delight of the supporting parents on the touchline. Despite the difficult conditions contributing to a few messy breakdowns Mr Hyatt did a great job of keeping play going and encouraged the game to flow.
Gresham's got off the mark with a Typically well finished try by Tom W and Orwell Park replied to level the score. This "tit for tat" scoring continued until half time with trys from Nick K, another from Tom W and a 40m individual stunner from Jack H. contributing to the 4-3 scoreline in Gresham's favour at the halfway mark.
In the second half despite the cold Gresham's stayed on the front foot through strong and confident carries from Harry D, Jack Ha and Albie P. From one such attack the ball was moved from one side of the pitch to the other before debutant Ted R-P stepped his way to the line to score Gresham's 5th try of the match.
Orwell Park were not deterred however and continued to play some outstanding rugby, regularly stringing multiple phases of attack together and grinding Gresham's defence down before finishing well out wide.
With time ebbing away two decisive scores sealed the win for Gresham's. First Jack Ho intercepted the ball 20m out from the opposition try line and finished well; then only moments later camped on his own try line Nick King stole the ball and took off to run the whole length of the pitch to score an amazing individual effort (supported all the way by a very hard working Olly M who covered alot of ground during the match in both attack and defence) and finish the game 7-6 in favour of the home side.
MOTM goes to Jack H who scored two fantastic trys but was also ever present in both attack and defence all match. Special mentions for Captain Michael S who had a very strong all round performance (especially in the tight) and to Arlo G and Ted R-P who both performed admirably in their first A Team fixture of the season.
Huge thanks to Orwell Park who played so wonderfully in such terrible conditions, to Mr Hyatt for his excellent officiating, to our parents for their support (nevermind the weather) and to the boys for their effort, enthusiasm and determination today. Well done.
