Match Report
Gresham's School Rifle Club vs  7 Bde CTR Meeting
On: Sunday, 22 Apr 2018
Venue: Away

The Rifle Club competed in the CCF Regional Championships, held annually at Beckingham Ranges in Lincolnshire. Unfortunately, there was not the usually high number of teams competing in the event this year but that could be due to it being held slightly earlier in the season this year. This said, there were enough teams to make a competition of it and it was a fantastic day had by all.

The weather was kind to us with it being a bright day but not too hot. The wind was slightly tricky at times with is passing through 12 o’clock on several occasions. These changes in wind were made even trickier for the team coaches by the fact that there are very few wind flags available on the range.

The two Gresham’s wind coaches of Toby Cubitt and Toby Little both performed exceptionally well in the tricky wind conditions and certainly played a vital part in the Gresham’s victory. Gresham’s were only able to raise enough shooters to compete in the team of VIII competition, which is the main event, but had to withdraw from the Cadet Pairs and Reserve Pairs competitions due to a lack of numbers.

It was a two-distance competition and Gresham’s took an early lead after the first distance at 300 yards and never looked back. There was some solid shooting from William Cubitt and Archie Hoo, but it was Toby Cubitt who led the way for the Gresham’s team, as he dropped just 2 points at the opening distance. At the longer, second, distance of 500 yards it was our Captain Toby Little that helped to keep the scoring high but yet again it was Toby Cubitt that top scored for the team at this distance. The Gresham’s total was good enough for 1st place at the end of the day but we will need to pick up a few more points if we are looking to win the Ashburton in the summer (50 years, this year, since Gresham’s first won the Ashburton).

The Gresham’s team faired very well in the Individual prize list with six of the team making it into the top 12 on the day. William Cubitt finished with the 3rd top individual score and his brother Toby finished as the top shot in the entire competition. Very well done to all those that took part.
