Even with the school's Main Square looking resplendent in the afternoon sun, we could not have anticipated the excitement that was about to unfold in our match against Norwich High School for Girls.
Again fielding a youthful side without any sixth formers, the girls lost the toss and were put into bat. Charlotte Gaunt and Hetty Holden took the game to the opposition with gusto, scoring 22 and 40 not out, respectively, guiding us on through an opening partnership of 66. The team ran hard later in the innings and closed with a very healthy 134 for 3.
When the opposition coach suggested retiring batters at 50, we should have guessed that they had the players to push us close. Coming out of the blocks like Usain Bolt, Norwich raced to 68 off 9 overs and looked to be close to the required run rate throughout. Wickets from Chloe Kydd and Lottie Bowden slowed the rate just enough to keep us a nose in front and Grace Hanworth-Knights closed out the match, getting a wicket with the penultimate ball, to seal a last-ball victory in front of a very appreciative crowd of supported that had enjoyed a great match.
Players of the match were Hetty Holden for carrying her bat with the top score and some very solid wicket-keeping and Charlotte Gaunt for her batting, her miserly run rate and a penultimate over that all but ended Norwich's hopes.
